Lodestone / Magnetite

Lodestone is naturally magnetised magnetite (iron oxide, Fe₃O₄) — one of the few naturally occurring permanent magnets in the world. Its magnetic property arises from specific conditions of lightning strikes or other natural phenomena that magnetise the iron oxide crystal in a single magnetic domain orientation. Lodestone was the world's first magnetic compass material: Chinese navigators used floating lodestones for navigation by the 11th century, and European mariners adopted the compass shortly after. The word 'lodestone' means 'leading stone' or 'guiding stone' — lode being an archaic word for way or journey.

Lodestone has been used as a magical drawing charm across virtually every magical tradition that encountered it. The fact that it invisibly attracts iron demonstrated for pre-scientific societies the existence of invisible forces — a clear proof that the material world is governed by principles beyond what the eye can see. Hoodoo (American folk magic) traditions use lodestones extensively as drawing charms — placed in mojo bags with condition oils and herbs, fed with iron filings to maintain their 'appetite,' and directed toward a specific desire.

As a charm, lodestone draws what the holder directs it toward: money, love, luck, employment, or any specific desired outcome. It is considered one of the most concretely effective of all charm materials because its physical action — literally pulling things toward itself — is directly observable. It requires clear intention and regular attention, but it is the most tangible demonstration available that invisible forces can bring the visible world into alignment with desire.
