Lucky Charms of Gambia

The Gambia is one of West Africa's smallest countries but has a vibrant Mandinka gris-gris tradition deeply embedded in daily life. Marabout-produced jujus and gris-gris amulets are worn by nearly everyone — drivers attach them to their vehicles, wrestlers wear them wrapped around their bodies, and mothers pin them to their babies' clothing. These amulets combine Quranic verses with natural ingredients and are believed to provide specific targeted protection.

The Gambia's jokingly called 'the smiling coast' reflects a culture in which good fortune is actively sought and celebrated. Cowrie shells feature in divination and traditional dress. The baobab tree is a village center and sacred gathering place across the country.
