Moonstone
Sri Lanka
The ethereal stone of the feminine divine, worn as a charm of intuition, emotional balance, new beginnings, and the luminous mystery of lunar cycles.
The stone of magic and transformation, carried as a charm for psychic protection, the awakening of hidden gifts, and the luminous mystery of the Northern Lights made stone.
Labradorite is a feldspar mineral that displays one of the most spectacular optical effects in the mineral kingdom: labradorescence, an iridescent display of electric blue, gold, green, copper, and violet light that seems to glow from within the stone. This effect is caused by interference of light between thin layers of alternating feldspar compositions within the stone, producing colours that change dramatically as the angle of view changes. The stone appears dark and ordinary from one angle, then explodes with colour from another — a perfect metaphor for the hidden depths it is believed to reveal.
Labradorite was first described scientifically from specimens found on Labrador's Paul Island in 1770, though Indigenous peoples of the Canadian north had known and revered it for thousands of years. Inuit legend tells that the Northern Lights were once trapped in the rocks of Labrador until a warrior struck the stone with his spear and released the aurora into the sky, leaving only some of the light behind inside the stone. Finland produces a variety called 'spectrolite' with particularly vivid colour ranges. Madagascar yields large transparent stones called 'rainbow moonstone.'
Labradorite is considered the supreme stone of magic, mystery, and spiritual transformation. It is believed to create a protective shield around the aura — an energy field that deflects unwanted energies while allowing positive influences to flow through. It is particularly prized by those engaged in spiritual practice, healing work, intuitive development, and any form of creative or mystical exploration.
Psychic protection, the awakening of hidden gifts, magical consciousness, safe exploration of mystery, and the revelation of luminous potential hidden beneath an ordinary surface.
Wear as a pendant or carry in a pocket when engaged in spiritual or creative work requiring psychic openness and protection simultaneously. Hold during meditation and allow the colours to guide your inner vision. Place on the third eye in meditation to open intuitive perception. Keep in creative workspaces to maintain a magical, inspired atmosphere.
The most vivid labradorescence in the world comes from Finnish spectrolite, which was discovered accidentally during WWII when engineers building an anti-tank fortification blasted through a labradorite deposit. The brilliant coloured stones exposed in the blast led to the discovery of what became Finland's most famous gemstone, named after its home country.
Technically yes — rainbow moonstone is a transparent variety of labradorite. Classic moonstone is orthoclase feldspar (a different mineral). Despite the name confusion, rainbow moonstone and labradorite are the same mineral family and share energetic qualities, though each has its own emphasis.
Yes — with a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5 it is moderately durable for daily wear, though should be protected from hard impacts and scratching. Clean with a soft damp cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, which can affect the layered structure that creates its optical effect.
Find the angle that shows the most vivid colour display and orient the stone so this angle faces outward. This is both the most visually stunning presentation and, in crystal tradition, the orientation that maximises the stone's energetic radiance.
