Labradorite

Labradorite is a feldspar mineral that displays one of the most spectacular optical effects in the mineral kingdom: labradorescence, an iridescent display of electric blue, gold, green, copper, and violet light that seems to glow from within the stone. This effect is caused by interference of light between thin layers of alternating feldspar compositions within the stone, producing colours that change dramatically as the angle of view changes. The stone appears dark and ordinary from one angle, then explodes with colour from another — a perfect metaphor for the hidden depths it is believed to reveal.

Labradorite was first described scientifically from specimens found on Labrador's Paul Island in 1770, though Indigenous peoples of the Canadian north had known and revered it for thousands of years. Inuit legend tells that the Northern Lights were once trapped in the rocks of Labrador until a warrior struck the stone with his spear and released the aurora into the sky, leaving only some of the light behind inside the stone. Finland produces a variety called 'spectrolite' with particularly vivid colour ranges. Madagascar yields large transparent stones called 'rainbow moonstone.'

Labradorite is considered the supreme stone of magic, mystery, and spiritual transformation. It is believed to create a protective shield around the aura — an energy field that deflects unwanted energies while allowing positive influences to flow through. It is particularly prized by those engaged in spiritual practice, healing work, intuitive development, and any form of creative or mystical exploration.
