Domovoy (House Spirit)

The Domovoy is the most important spirit in Slavic domestic life — a small, hairy, bearded creature who lives behind the stove or threshold and watches over the household. Found across Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian folk tradition, the Domovoy is inherited with the home and moves with the family when they relocate. A content Domovoy ensures peaceful sleep, harmonious relationships, and protection from thieves and misfortune. An ignored or offended one causes poltergeist-like disruption.

As a lucky charm, the Domovoy figure represents the sacred bond between family and home. Keeping a Domovoy amulet near the hearth or threshold acknowledges the invisible guardian's presence and invites his ongoing protection. Families traditionally left offerings of bread, salt, and porridge for their Domovoy on special occasions.

In contemporary Russian folk practice, small Domovoy figurines — typically depicting a stout, bearded old man — are placed near the stove, front door, or in a corner of the main living area. They are considered among the most powerful household protection charms in the Slavic tradition.
