Charm Traditions in Malta

Malta's position at the center of the Mediterranean means its charm culture draws from Phoenician, Roman, Arab, Norman, and Catholic traditions in one concentrated space. The Maltese Cross — the eight-pointed cross of the Knights of St. John — is the supreme Maltese emblem and protective symbol, carried on medals, worn as jewelry, and displayed on homes. It represents the eight beatitudes and has protected Maltese identity through centuries of siege and foreign rule.

The dghajsa (traditional water taxi) and the eye of Osiris painted on the prow of Maltese fishing boats (luzzus) are continuations of an ancient Mediterranean tradition of protective eyes on boats. The evil eye (ghajn) is taken seriously, and coral amulets and specific prayers are used against it. The rosary and Catholic saints' medals are carried by virtually all Maltese as protective objects.
